Why Is My Fridge Leaking Water?

Why Is My Fridge Leaking Water?

If your refrigerator has sprung a leak, you might ask, “Why is my fridge leaking water?”. Refrigerators can sometimes leak water, which can be highly irritating. The kitchen floor may become slippery due to fridge leakage, which can cause a safety hazard. It is therefore essential to fix your fridge if it is leaking water. But, what causes the fridge to leak water?

If your fridge has a blocked water line or obstructed defrost drain, you might face water leakage. The blocked water line will prevent the fridge water dispenser from working correctly, making it leak water. The uneven fridge can also lead to this problem.

Why Is My Fridge Leaking Water?

1. Clogged Water Line

Almost all the refrigerators have a water line that allows them to provide drinking and ice water. Blocking this water line will result in leaking water from the refrigerator.

The fridge may also fail to make the right amount of ice due to a blocked water line. A blocked water line may also prevent your water dispenser from working correctly.

It is therefore essential to clear the clogged water line to make your fridge operate as intended. Here is how to do that.

  • Start by turning off the refrigerator.
  • Afterwards, you will have to turn on the shutoff valve. By taking these safety precautions, you will avoid damaging the refrigerator or injuring yourself.
  • Next, you should check for broken water lines.
  • If there is extensive damage to the water line, you should replace it. If possible, try replacing the water line yourself.
  • Or, you can also contact a technician to help replace a new water line.

2. Blocked Defrost Drain

A clogged defrost drain is another reason your fridge is leaking water. Your fridge will cause excessive ice buildup if the defrost drain clogs. Water drips into a pan as the refrigerator defrosts automatically.

Clogging of the defrost drain can also sometimes occur due to food particles or debris. Clogs can lead to ice buildup. Try melting the ice to fix the problem. Put warm water on it to do so.

After the ice melts, water drains into the drain. Alternatively, you can use a pipe cleaner to break the ice apart. If the clog is deep within the hose, moving the fridge and shutting off the valve might be necessary.

Conclusion

Water can sometimes leak from refrigerators, causing a great deal of discomfort. Therefore, if your fridge leaks, you should fix it immediately.

There is a good chance that your fridge will leak sooner or later, mainly if it is an older model. However, if you have no idea what is causing your refrigerator to leak, you should consult a technician.
